We’re always tempted by what I’d call “aspirational purchases” like pretty shoes, going-out clothing or summer dresses, and further to accounting for our weather, the breakdown of our wardrobes needs to reflect the percentage of time we spend on different lifestyle activities like work, social and leisure.
Clothes that don’t reflect our lifestyle or climate. Clothing scattered over different rooms, same-type items stored separately, clothes from different seasons mixed together, items not grouped logically or positioned in a visible and accessible manner all prevents us from seeing what we really have in our wardrobes. Contrary to believing that it’s because we don’t have enough clothing and despite everyday frustrations around limited storage space, having a jam-packed walk-in wardrobe only adds to the overwhelm (and guilt) if we don’t know what clothes we like and what suits us. There’s so much I could talk about on every aspect of this subject, but let me give you just a few great incentives for critically evaluating your clothes. I feel quite sad about this, and this feedback over the years has been a massive motivator in writing my book and sharing my Declutter Therapy approach. You can sell your used clothes a few different ways.Īny city I have ever been in has a consignment store, so if you just want them off your plate ASAP, but still want some cash for them, bring them to a local consignment or used clothing store in your area. Since everyone is different, make a system of organization that jives with your personality. This way they looked ‘filed’ and are easier to grab and identify without messing everything up. I fold pants four time and shorts two times to allow for horizontal storage. Clothes I only wear occasionally are further back to help my closet stay organized. Making sure the types of clothes I wear most often are the easiest to grab is key. I also sort them based on sleeve length to make choosing for the weather that day much easier. I’ll put dressy stuff in first and then casual clothes afterwards. Personally, I like to hang up clothes based on type. You might want to organize it by colour or my fav, by type of clothing. The more streamlined and organized your closet is with ‘YES’ items, the less likely you are to clutter it back up again. The key is to organize and hang up all these clothes right away and make it look beautiful.
